Burn Ban - Effective 9/22/2025 until further notice
On Monday, September 22, 2025, the Governor’s Proclamation prohibiting open fires and smoking in and near woodlands will take effect. This was done because of the fire conditions we have and will continue to have well into Fall. The drought conditions are severe across the state and wildfire indices are at the point where mop-up operations are extensive and the potential for large fire activity exists.
What prohibitions are contained in the Proclamation?
…it shall be unlawful for any person in the State to
Kindle any open fire, including fires built for camping, the burning of debris, or warming, but the following shall be excluded from these restrictions:
Training fires conducted under the direct control and supervision of qualified instructors at a training facility operated by a fire department or government entity; Provided, that a permit for such training fires is obtained from the Division of Forests and Lands prior to burning.
Category I “campfires” contained within fire resistive rings at public or private campgrounds that have permanent staff on site; Provided, that a permit for such Category I fires is obtained from the Division of Forests and Lands prior to burning.
Liquid fueled gas grills, lanterns or liquid-fueled gas fire stoves.
smoking a pipe, cigar and/or cigarette outdoors in or near woodlands, or on public trails.
What this means is:
Category I fires are prohibited everywhere, except in a campground which has been inspected, meets the campground campfire specifications, and has a seasonal fire permit
Category 2, 3, and 4 fires are banned everywhere, public and private lands
No smoking is allowed in or near woodlands or on public trails
Vehicle Fire on Colby Road
May 28, 2025
Meredith personnel were alerted at 18:59 of a vehicle fire on Colby Road in the Chemung area of Town. Colby Road is an unmaintained Class 6 road.
The caller stated to 911 that his van was burning and beginning to spread to the surrounding brush.
A crew responded from the Meredith Center Station with 14 Forestry 2, a new truck which was recently placed in service, arrived on the scene at 19:23 and began extinguishment efforts. 14 Engine 4 and 14 Forestry 1 responded from the Downtown Station to supplement operations with manpower and additional water. Downtown crews arrived at 19:33. New Hampton’s 17 Engine 1 also responded as automatic mutual aid.
A delivery driver was trying to make his way to his next delivery on Pinnacle Ridge Road and was routed by his GPS unit to use Colby Road, which has not been maintained in decades is today nothing more than a trail. The vehicle was located approximately one-half mile into the woods. When crews arrived, the van was fully involved along with a 10’ x 30’ area of brush on both sides of the vehicle spreading through the woods.
The worth of having a new 14 Forestry 2 in the Meredith Center Station proved invaluable in that a quick response kept the fire spread to a smaller area versus a large woods fire that would have required mutual aid for more personnel and apparatus.
Meredith and New Hampton companies were in service at 20:42.
