The Laconia Fire Department requested mutual aid to the City as calls for an odor of natural gas in the building began to flood into the Lakes Region Mutual Fire Aid Communications Center. 14C1 (Jones) and 14 Engine 1 responded to the City to assist. Meredith companies were first sent to 126 New Salem Street at the Laconia Police station. An odor was present but meters designed to detect natural gas did not pick up any trace of natural gas. Shortly after, Meredith companies were sent to Laconia Hospital at 80 Highland Street for a similar report. Once again, no gas was detected. Meredith companies were then sent to the Taylor Home at 435 Union Avenue for on odor of gas in the building with the same result.
The cause of the odor was explained by Liberty Utilities that too much of the chemical that gives natural gas it's odor (mercaptan) had been added to the system. Mercaptan, also known as methyl mercaptan or methanethiol, is added as natural gas is odorless. Over 55 calls for a gas odor were handled in the City by Laconia and mutual aid departments
Meredith companies were in service at 19:02.
