MEREDITH FIRE DEPARTMENT
RESIDENT STUDENT INTERN FIREFIGHTER PROGRAM
Program Description
The Meredith Fire Department Student Intern Program is designed to provide fire science students attending Lakes Region Community College with opportunities to gain practical experience in various areas of the fire service. The downtown station is an approximate 18 minute drive to the LRCC campus.
Students live and work in Meredith's downtown fire station and play an active role in day to day operations.
Meredith is a call fire department with a full time chief. EMS calls are handled by a private ambulance service (Stewarts Ambulance) and ride along opportunities can also be arranged as part of the program.
The Meredith Fire Department responds to over 500 calls per year and Stewarts Ambulance handles around 1400 medical calls annually for the town.
The Student Intern Program is highly competitive and only four students will be invited to participate each year. It is our goal to help interns develop into well rounded and prepared firefighters who are ready for full time employment. Students are given free housing at the downtown station as well as numerous opportunities for practical training and experience in exchange for the hours they spend working their duty shifts. This will typically amount to 32 hours per week. Students will be paid for time spent responding to calls and training at the same rate as regular firefighter trainees.
A typical day for a student intern can include some or all of the following:
- Structure Fires
- Alarm Activations
- Wildland Fires
- Water and Ice Rescues
- Aerial Operations
